Recent articles:The Similarities Between Online Gaming and Gambling...Tuesday, October 21. 2008
When online gaming involves betting, gambling or competing for any kind of monetary reward, it can be dangerous - particularly for those players with a history of addiction. Online gaming websites typically offer casino based games or sports betting lines. You may come across the occasional website which offers both together. Although these sites present players with the opportunity to boost their investment, they also present the risk of losing that same investment.
The competitive nature of most people intensifies when involved in a battle with artificial intelligence. The kind of artificial intelligence which is often encountered when playing online games is usually highly skilled and it can quite easily contribute to the human player’s mindset of wanting to win. This will result in an overwhelming urge to continue playing until you have beaten or mastered the game. This intense competitiveness surfaces in varying strengths amongst gamers, and not all gamers have will become obsessed with completing the game, or beating the artificial intelligence. What is true, however, is that most gamers do like to sit for hours and play, usually until the point comes when they have gotten to a certain level, or until they have finished the game. This is very much like the mentality of a gambler when refusing to leave the Blackjack table until he / she has won back at least what they have spent. In both instances there really isn’t a gauge to measure when the game has been won. A gamer will always believe that they can take things to the next level, or maybe the game offers a different visual aspect with a different set of goals (perhaps when a different skills level is being played), or maybe the gamer will choose to play another human instead of going up against artificial intelligence. Whichever way you choose to look at it, the possibilities are virtually endless as far as continuing the game goes. There are always other ways to keep it going, much like the gambler in the casino who tells himself that once he makes five hundred dollars he will quit. The trouble is, once he has won five hundred it seems that little bit more likely that he will win more, so he tells himself that one more round will do no harm. When he finds himself down again the cycle continues under the mentality he can win back his investment! Having said all this, the type of person who usually gravitates towards gaming and gambling is likely to have an addictive personality. The desire to continue playing, combined with the risk of not feeling satisfied, when you have finally won, is the thread which binds these people together. Online gamers do not necessarily need to be risking money for addiction to be a problem. Spending too much time playing online games will result in the loss of valuable time which they could instead be using to contribute their valuable skills to society. If played in moderation, online games can help to unwind and relax the player, however just remember that you own the game and the game doesn’t own you…
