Deal or no Deal is a game show that has taken the world by storm. Since its debut in Holland in 2001, it has been aired, using different names, in more than 65 countries around the world.
Countless contestants have won millions of dollars total. There are internet versions where home viewers can play along, even some that allow players to play for real money. Deal or no Deal has been parodied and referenced many time on other popular shows many times. Economists have even studied the game to get insight on how people assess financial risk. The object for a contestant, an audience member, of Deal or no Deal is to walk away with the most money possible. As Howie Mandell, the host of the American version, states at the beginning of every show, “One million dollars as the top prize. No crazy stunts to perform, no trivia questions to answer. In fact, there’s only one question you need to know how to answer, the only question that counts. Deal or No Deal?” There are 26 numbered briefcases. Each case has a dollar amount ranging from one cent to the top prize of one million dollars. In the American version, each case is held by a beautiful woman on the stage. The money amounts are placed, in order, on a monitor on the stage next to the women. The contestant first chooses one briefcase to be theirs. That case is placed near them. If he or she does not sell it, or take a deal, the amount in that case is theirs at the end of the game. He or she then chooses one case out of the remaining 25 cases on stage. The host then instructs the woman holding that case to open it, revealing the cash amount inside. As the dollar amount is revealed, it is eliminated from the monitor. A “banker,” who is off camera, then calls the host on the phone and offers the contestant a “deal.” The banker offers to buy the contestants case for an amount of money is usually a rough average of all the dollar amounts that have not been revealed. The contestant must decide whether he or she is going to accept the deal or choose another case. If he accepts the deal, the game is over. If he doesn’t, he must chose five more cases before another offer of a deal is made. Deal or no Deal has a great play along element. Watching the contestants weigh the option of taking the deal or walking away might be one of the most entertaining parts of the show. Near the end, even the most usually uninterested parties in a room where the show is being watched will be urging the contestants to “take the deal.” Defined tags for this entry: Deal or No Deal, Online Games
Poker Players - Experts versus Amateurs.Friday, November 21. 2008
Poker on the surface appears deceptively simple, but beneath the surface it is a very complex game with enormous subtlety. Because the basic rules of poker are so simple novice players tend to learn the game fast and are even deluded to believe that they are good at it. This veneer of simplicity is an expert’s dream because this is what which makes the game so profitable. Novice players keep returning to the table even after repeated losses, often blaming luck or chance for their loss. Little do they realize that Poker with its simple rules is less a game of chance and more a game of skill.
Expert poker players do not rely on luck. Instead they try to take luck out of the picture. Expert poker players rely on judgment. Ultimately over the long run everyone gets the same proportion of good cards and bad cards or of winning hands and losing hands. The difference between the experts and the novices is simply that the novices tend to rely more on big hands and lucky draws to make their win. The experts on the other hand use their skills of discernment, they recognize when the big hand is not the best hand, they try to minimize their losses on a bad hand and maximize their profits when they have a good hand. They recognize that skill more than chance rules the game. Poker logic is not made of tricks and ploys nor is it purely mathematical. Tricks and ploys help only to certain extent, such as acting out, anger displays etc they only distract the lower players. Consistent winners of poker never yield to such tactics. Consistent winning requires more than relying on tricks and ploys it requires a sound understanding of the subtlety of the game. While an understanding of the mathematical principles helps in playing a better game, consistent champions are not mathematicians. They understand the cocktail of forces operating on the poker table, psychology, mathematical chance, patience, time length, pot size etc. Experts play to win. At the poker table each man is to his own, no relations no friendships enter the table. This does not mean that poker is not a social game, but the experts recognize that at the table there are no sacrifices the object is to win. Similarly the experts do not play to win every pot, they instead try to develop a discipline to let go of a second best hand and not chase after every pot. They also think of each individual poker game as a part of a big picture. So the wins or losses are evaluated over a period of a year, versus a single game. When a game is played like this the experts develop an almost Zen like attitude wherein the results of individual pots or even individual games do not ruffle them mentally. This keeps the mistakes of judgment made when emotionally charged to a minimum. A part of this learning comes in knowing when to quit the game, thus adopting a long term view minimizes the acts of desperation. It also gives the experts the discernment of when to quit, because they recognize when they are underdogs. They also recognize that there is always another day, another game and over the long run the number of wins will be in the same proportion as the number of losses. Online gambling should not be prohibited by the government. Many people enjoy playing at online casinos and should be able to do so if they choose. The government can impose taxes on online gambling which would make it legal. The economy could use the boost of revenue that allowing online gambling in the United States would create if it were taxed to be made legal.
A small percentage of people do develop gambling habits, but this does not justify making online gambling illegal in the United States. Online gambling should be legal for residents of the United States and people who live in the United States should be able to gamble online if they choose to do so. Not only is online gambling fun and a way for people to win a little or a lot of money, it is also a good form of entertainment. If someone is playing responsibly when gambling online they can spend less or about the same as they would for a night out on the town and if they win they can cash out with more than they started with. Casinos are very popular and entertaining, but usually mean travelling long distances for most people who want to visit. Online casinos are convenient and allow people to visit a casino without even leaving their home. They can log on 24 hours a day 7 days a week and find their favourite casino game to play. There are legal online lottery sites that allow people to do the same things that make online gambling at casinos illegal. It’s basically a double standard, and one that is not popular among those who enjoy visiting an online casino to play their favourite online casino games. There is a lot of potential for the government to make money from legalizing online gambling. As stated by the Interactive Gaming Council, “an estimated 1,800 gaming web sites with a projected gross income of $4.3 billion for 2003….” is this not enough money for the government? This is possible if the online casinos are taxed the same way that the brick and mortar casinos are taxed. There is not much difference applying taxes to the online casinos than there is to controlling and taxing online lottery sites. And since online lottery sites already exist legal online gambling should also be possible. Holiday GamesTuesday, November 18. 2008
The meaning of the word holiday is different from family to family as it is from one place on the globe to another. Holiday in the States usually means a special day that is observed like Christmas, Hanukkah, Cinco de Mayo, or one of the many others.
To some people a holiday is a vacation. People usually think of family holidays but some do think about a holiday as something to do alone. If the holiday is a special day that is recognized by a group of people there are often certain traditions that are followed by each family. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Holiday denoting a war victory over the French Army in 1852 and is presently a day that celebrates Mexican ancestry with dancing and other festivities. Hanukkah is a holiday celebrated by those of the Jewish faith; it is observed for eight nights and marks the rededication of the Temple of Israeli after it’s desecration by an invading culture. Christmas is a holiday celebrated by many different countries around the world and is mostly a Christian Holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus; Christmas is often observed with the giving of presents and other traditions vary widely. A holiday that is a vacation can vary greatly depending on the chosen holiday. The way to make any holiday the most enjoyable is to plan well for it. A family may choose to holiday in any country around the world and to base the holiday on specific activities such as visiting theme parks, or doing an activity together such as skiing, camping, sailing, or any other activity. What to take for this type of holiday of course varies on the holiday that is planned on. If the holiday is for skiing; then skis, ski boots, ski poles, ski clothing along with other warm clothing is essential, and other items that you may wish to pack also include cameras, cards, games, and other evening activities. If the holiday is centred on an amusement park then perhaps some lighter clothes are a good idea along with some warmer clothes that are comfortable; comfortable shoes are an excellent thing to pack! Holidays can mean different things to different people. They can mean anything from a special day that is observed to a vacation that is centred on one or a few different activities to do. The perfect family holiday should be planned to make it the most enjoyable for everyone involved and the best way to do this would be to make sure there are plenty of games to play! If you want a holiday with plenty of games to play visit one of the many holiday parks maintained by Eurocamp. Bingo Halls Closing...Tuesday, November 11. 2008
Bingo, a game that has been around since the 1500’s, is an internationally known and practised activity. From using it in variation in schools to help kids learn, to senior citizens playing it at their retirement homes, to church games on the weekend, bingo is loved and played by all kinds of people.
The classic North American way of playing bingo is in a bingo hall, sitting at tables, where each player generally has multiple cards to play with. As the numbers are called, they player marks off the number on their cards (if they have the number), and wait to try and form a certain pattern on their card, generally a straight or diagonal line. The games generally end up being full-card games, where every number on your card must be marked off. Bingo is becoming even more popular with the game now available online. People can play internationally with each other. Although many people believe online bingo to have had an ill effect on the live bingo community, it hasn’t. The demographic for those that go to play in person is not the same demographic as those on the online community. One would be hard pressed to find many senior citizens sitting at a computer. Aside from the fact that most of their generation don’t know how to use a computer, the online aspect takes away the social aspect that live bingo has for them. In fact, indoor smoking bans have had a much larger effect on the live-bingo attendance than online gaming has. There are many bingo halls that have had to run fewer games and, in some cases, even close their doors permanently, just because attendance has gotten so low (generally 15% – 25% fewer attendants). Maybe the next generation will lean more towards the online version so they can stay at home and still enjoy the game. Defined tags for this entry: online bingo
