The meaning of the word holiday is different from family to family as it is from one place on the globe to another. Holiday in the States usually means a special day that is observed like Christmas, Hanukkah, Cinco de Mayo, or one of the many others.

To some people a holiday is a vacation. People usually think of family holidays but some do think about a holiday as something to do alone.

If the holiday is a special day that is recognized by a group of people there are often certain traditions that are followed by each family. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Holiday denoting a war victory over the French Army in 1852 and is presently a day that celebrates Mexican ancestry with dancing and other festivities. Hanukkah is a holiday celebrated by those of the Jewish faith; it is observed for eight nights and marks the rededication of the Temple of Israeli after it’s desecration by an invading culture. Christmas is a holiday celebrated by many different countries around the world and is mostly a Christian Holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus; Christmas is often observed with the giving of presents and other traditions vary widely.

A holiday that is a vacation can vary greatly depending on the chosen holiday. The way to make any holiday the most enjoyable is to plan well for it. A family may choose to holiday in any country around the world and to base the holiday on specific activities such as visiting theme parks, or doing an activity together such as skiing, camping, sailing, or any other activity. What to take for this type of holiday of course varies on the holiday that is planned on. If the holiday is for skiing; then skis, ski boots, ski poles, ski clothing along with other warm clothing is essential, and other items that you may wish to pack also include cameras, cards, games, and other evening activities. If the holiday is centred on an amusement park then perhaps some lighter clothes are a good idea along with some warmer clothes that are comfortable; comfortable shoes are an excellent thing to pack!

Holidays can mean different things to different people. They can mean anything from a special day that is observed to a vacation that is centred on one or a few different activities to do. The perfect family holiday should be planned to make it the most enjoyable for everyone involved and the best way to do this would be to make sure there are plenty of games to play!
